In the high mountain valleys\, far from roads\, the Quechua still maintain a symbiotic relationship with their animals as they have for thousands of years. Their culture\, though threatened\, survives. But these people and others who service the tourist industry were angry that their chosen leader was expelled. This outrage fueled the recent outbreak of political unrest. My talk will delve into the history of conquistadors\, explorers and tourists in Peru\, and how and why the indigenous culture still survives despite these incursions. \nFor many years\, Lucretia worked as a food and travel writer. Her pieces have appeared in Vanity Fair\, Savour\, Travel and Leisure\, and very frequently in the Travel Section and Magazine of the Los Angeles Times. But her most favorite assignment was for Condé Nast Traveler. They sent her down to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps. He was Hiram Bingham\, who in 1911 brought the world’s attention to Machu Picchu. She camped where he had camped\, and trekked to many ruins that he had discovered under layers of vines. In recent years she had returned many times to Peru\, leading trips there for CT Audubon Ecotravel. Ms. Bingham is the granddaughter of Hiram Bingham who rediscovered Machu Picchu. An expert in contemporary Russian nationalism\, politics\, and economy\, he has studied Russia and the former Soviet Union for over three decades. Recent articles cover topics such as Russian “soft power\,” the structure of the Russian political and economic elite\, and US-Russia relations in the run-up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He also studies nationalism\, and is currently working on the project “Visualizing the nation\,” which explores how political nationalism has expressed itself through visual media – film\, television and the internet. \nRutland is the author of two books—The Politics of Economic Stagnation in the Soviet Union and The Myth of the Plan: Lessons of Soviet Planning Experience—and editor of four others\, along with numerous scholarly articles and book chapters. He has taught at Wesleyan since 1989. Before that he taught at the University of Texas at Austin\, and at the University of York and London University in the UK. He has a BA from Oxford and a D. Phil from York. He has also been a visiting professor at Columbia University\, and is an associate of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. From 2013-19 he was editor in chief of Nationalities Papers\, the journal of the Association for the Study of Nationalities\, and is currently associate editor of Russian Review. \nHe was a visiting Fulbright professor at the European University in St. Petersburg in 2000 and at Sophia University in Tokyo in 2003. Join award-winning author and New York Times science columnist Carl Zimmer for a timely conversation about the coronavirus pandemic. This will be a return visit to SECWAC for Mr. Zimmer\, who fascinated us in 2019 with a pre-pandemic conversation about She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: The Powers\, Perversions\, and Potential of Heredity\, his 2018 book about how researchers are rewriting the history of humanity\, discovering previously unknown collisions between ancient peoples and the ways in which new ideas (not unlike coronavirus) have spread around the globe. \nAbout Carl Zimmer \nCarl Zimmer is a columnist for The New York Times and the author of 14 books about science. Zimmer earned a B.A. in English from Yale and worked at Discover\, where he served for five years as a senior editor. Since then\, he has written hundreds of articles for magazines including National Geographic\, Scientific American\, and The Atlantic. Zimmer’s writing has earned a number of awards from organizations including the National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2016\, he won the 2016 Stephen Jay Gould Prize\, awarded by the Society for the Study of Evolution to recognize individuals whose sustained efforts have advanced public understanding of evolutionary science. She Has Her Mother’s Laugh was named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review\, and The Guardian named it the best science book of 2018.
