SUMMARY:SECWAC Presents: Gonul Tol "Turkey at the Centennial: From an Imperfect Democracy to Outright Autocracy?"
DESCRIPTION:Who:     Gonul Tol\, Middle East Institute \nDate:     December 11\, 2023 \nTopic:  “Turkey at the Centennial: From an Imperfect Democracy to Outright Autocracy?” \nTime:    5:30pm Reception | 6:00pm Presentation | 7:30pm Member Dinner \nCost:     Members are Free | $20 non-member zoom or in-person access \nLocation: StoneRidge\, 186 Jerry Browne Road\, Mystic\, CT 06355 \nDinner is sold out\n\nClick here to learn about Gonul Tol \nThe Turkish Republic has turned 100 years old. The founding elite who carried out the most radical secularization reforms in the Muslim world imagined the new republic as an ethnically homogenous\, modern\, secular country. That vision has been challenged many times by various segments of the country. The most significant of them\, however\, the one led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\, who took over an imperfect democracy and turned it into an autocracy where religious brotherhoods hold unprecedented power in society and bureaucratic institutions of the country. The idea of an “ethnically homogenous nation” has been dealt the biggest blow thanks to the presence of millions of Syrian refugees. What do all these things mean for the future and prospects for a liberal democratic Turkey? \n  \nStoneRidge Retirement Community Residents – Free to Attend!\n  \n\n \n \n Single Event Registration for Nonmembers Only\n \n \n First Name(Required)Last NameEmail(Required)\n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State / Province / Region\n \n \n ZIP / Postal Code\n \n \n Single Event Registration\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n How Did You Hear About Us?Please choose:(Required)\n \n \n Friend or Family\n \n \n \n Email Notice\n \n \n \n Guest or Friend of Speaker\n \n \n \n Facebook\n \n \n \n Newspaper\n \n \n \n Other

SUMMARY:SECWAC Presents: Lucretia Bingham "Invaders of an Ancient Culture: Conquistadors\, Explorers\, and Tourists in Peru"
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nWho:    Lucretia Bingham \nDate:     November 15\, 2023 \nTopic:    Invaders of an Ancient Culture: Conquistadors\, Explorers\, and Tourists in Peru \nTime:    5:30pm Reception | 6:00pm Presentation | 7:30pm Member Dinner \nCost:     Members are Free | $20 non-member zoom or in-person access \nLocation: First Congregational Church of Old Lyme \nJoin us for dinner: Old Lyme Country Club immediately after presentation \nDinner Sold Out\nThe recently ousted president of Peru came from the altiplano of Peru\, a vast austere landscape dotted with the rare wild vicuña\, and their more plentiful cousins\, llamas and alpaca. In the high mountain valleys\, far from roads\, the Quechua still maintain a symbiotic relationship with their animals as they have for thousands of years. Their culture\, though threatened\, survives. But these people and others who service the tourist industry were angry that their chosen leader was expelled. This outrage fueled the recent outbreak of political unrest. My talk will delve into the history of conquistadors\, explorers and tourists in Peru\, and how and why the indigenous culture still survives despite these incursions. \nFor many years\, Lucretia worked as a food and travel writer. Her pieces have appeared in Vanity Fair\, Savour\, Travel and Leisure\, and very frequently in the Travel Section and Magazine of the Los Angeles Times. But her most favorite assignment was for Condé Nast Traveler. They sent her down to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps. He was Hiram Bingham\, who in 1911 brought the world’s attention to Machu Picchu. She camped where he had camped\, and trekked to many ruins that he had discovered under layers of vines. In recent years she had returned many times to Peru\, leading trips there for CT Audubon Ecotravel. Ms. Bingham is the granddaughter of Hiram Bingham who rediscovered Machu Picchu. She has walked in her grandfather’s footsteps along the Inca trail and has explored exotic locations as a writer and painter. \n  \n\n \n \n Single Event Registration for Nonmembers Only\n \n \n First Name(Required)Last NameEmail(Required)\n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State / Province / Region\n \n \n ZIP / Postal Code\n \n \n Single Event Registration\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n How Did You Hear About Us?Please choose:(Required)\n \n \n Friend or Family\n \n \n \n Email Notice\n \n \n \n Guest or Friend of Speaker\n \n \n \n Facebook\n \n \n \n Newspaper\n \n \n \n Other

Every Citizen a Statesman is his first book. \nWhere did World Affairs Councils like SECWAC come from? When? Why? Drawing on Every Citizen a Statesman\, a new book on Harvard University Press\, historian David Allen will show that the World Affairs Council movement has been one of the main ways in which Americans have tried to reconcile global power with democracy at home. This presentation will chart the Councils’ origins in the 1930s\, show how the Council ideal was pursued nationwide in the 1950s\, and offer thoughts as to the fate of the Councils — and the dilemma of public opinion and foreign policy that they respond to — thereafter. \n  \nRSVP for Dinner with David Allen >\n  \nEvent Registration for Nonmembers:\n\n \n \n \n \n First Name(Required)Last NameEmail(Required)\n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State / Province / Region\n \n \n ZIP / Postal Code\n \n \n Single Event Registration\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n How Did You Hear About Us?Please choose:(Required)\n \n \n Friend or Family\n \n \n \n Email Notice\n \n \n \n Guest or Friend of Speaker\n \n \n \n Facebook\n \n \n \n Newspaper\n \n \n \n Other

The idea that a country was an exception to the rules governing global affairs ran counter to the mission of the United Nations\, the principles enshrined in many human rights agreements\, and the need for global cooperation in the face of threats like climate change and pandemic emergencies. True\, a powerful country like the United States has continued to assert its unilateral right to\, among other things\, remain outside institutions like the International Criminal Court\, while a small country like North Korea has refused to participate in many global initiatives\, including most recently the distribution of COVID vaccines. But exceptionalism has now become even more widespread and can be traced in the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, China’s more assertive foreign policy in Asia\, and the Global North’s continued high rates of greenhouse-gas emissions. Has the very notion of an international community–namely\, a shared consensus on moral principles and a joint commitment to deal with global threats–finally run its course?” \nLink to John Feffer’s Bio at Institute for Policy Studies \nLink to John Feffer’s Website \nRegister for members only dinner with John Feffer:\nMEMBERS ONLY

SUMMARY:Science & Research During the Pandemic: Good\, the Bad\, & the Ugly
DESCRIPTION:  \nWho: Carl Zimmer\, science writer\, author and New York Times science columnist \nWhen: Wednesday\, September 21\, 2022 \nWhere: First Congregational Church of Old Lyme [5 Ferry Road\, Old Lyme\, CT 06371] \nTime: 6pm to 7pm \nFee: Non-members $20 Zoom Access | Non-members $20 In-Person \nSECWAC Presents:\nCarl Zimmer: Science and Research During the Pandemic – the Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly \nIt was about a century ago when modern medicine dealt with its first major pandemic\, the influenza of 1918. What did we learn then and what has science and research in the age of coronavirus taught us about controlling the spread\, testing\, and reporting of disease? What have we learned about the role of multinational cooperation in stemming the spread of a disease that recognizes no borders? How can those lessons prepare us for future pandemics in our interconnected world? Join award-winning author and New York Times science columnist Carl Zimmer for a timely conversation about the coronavirus pandemic. This will be a return visit to SECWAC for Mr. Zimmer\, who fascinated us in 2019 with a pre-pandemic conversation about She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: The Powers\, Perversions\, and Potential of Heredity\, his 2018 book about how researchers are rewriting the history of humanity\, discovering previously unknown collisions between ancient peoples and the ways in which new ideas (not unlike coronavirus) have spread around the globe. \nAbout Carl Zimmer \nCarl Zimmer is a columnist for The New York Times and the author of 14 books about science. Zimmer earned a B.A. in English from Yale and worked at Discover\, where he served for five years as a senior editor. Since then\, he has written hundreds of articles for magazines including National Geographic\, Scientific American\, and The Atlantic. Zimmer’s writing has earned a number of awards from organizations including the National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
