From Brexit to the Alternative for Germany to recent governments in Italy and Austria – the rise of populism across Europe (and elsewhere) has been one of the most noteworthy political trends of the last five years. But what exactly is populism? How can we understand its appeal and assess the chances of success for populist movements in various contexts? This talk investigates the causes and consequences of this disturbing recent trend.

ABOUT SARAH WILIARTY:

Sarah Elise Wiliarty is an Associate Professor of Government at Wesleyan University. She is also affiliated with the departments of German Studies and Feminist Gender and Sexuality Studies, as well as the College of Social Studies. Her research interests include political parties, women and politics, and West European politics with a particular focus on Germany. She is the author of a book on German Christian Democracy entitled Bringing Women to the Party: The CDU and the Politics of Gender in Germany. She has also published articles in German PoliticsPolitics and Gender, and Polity, as well as numerous book chapters.
